Art History Courses

Starting with the earliest art discovered, this course focuses on the development of sculpture and painting and the ideas that were tied to the art, from hunting to mythology. After a survey of the earliest art, the course traces over 3,000 years of artistic developments in Mesopotamia. A comprehensive look at Ancient Egyptian art rounds out the course. The art project for this course involves students creating their own cuneiform tablet and creating an Egyptian scene using hieroglyphs and the styles of Egyptian tomb artists. (Note: due to the nature of early sculptures, there are some photos of nude sculptures that will be shown)

This course traces the art from earliest Greek civilizations, including the Cycladic Islanders, Minoans, and Mycenaeans. Students will then be guided through the three major stages of Greek art, archaic, classical, and Hellenistic. After examining the art and its context of Greece, an overview of Roman art, from the Kingdom through Empire will be taught. The art project for this course involves making a Roman mosaic. (Note: due to the nature of the art, there are images of nude sculptures that will be shown)

Medieval art mirrors the drastic shift from the Classical world. In this course, both secular and religious art will be examined in the context of society. The importance of art in society comes across through books, including Medieval manuscripts and the Book of Hours. In addition, painting and sculpture also play a large role, particularly for religious purposes. This course spans Late Antiquity (c. AD 400) up to the proto-Renaissance. The art project for this course is for students to create a page of a Medieval manuscript.

This course will begin its survey of Renaissance art in Italy, where the Renaissance began before spreading to other areas of Europe. Focusing on the three major regions of Renaissance art,
